Indonesian rupiah — Bali and Indonesia currency

The Indonesian Rupiah is Indonesia’s official currency, issued by Bank Indonesia. Its ISO code is IDR and the symbol is Rp — you will often see prices written like Rp 50,000. Because a single rupiah is a very small unit, everyday prices carry lots of zeros; 1,000 rupiah is only a few pence, so large numbers are normal until you convert them to pounds.

There is one currency for the whole country: Indonesia uses the rupiah in Bali, Jakarta and everywhere else. Some tourist-facing businesses in Bali may also quote a US dollar figure, but that is a convenience price — you are normally charged in rupiah.

Bali uses the Indonesian Rupiah, the same as the rest of Indonesia — there is no separate Bali currency or Bali money. If you are checking what to bring for Bali, the answer is IDR, priced in rupiah across shops, restaurants, transport and tour desks.

Cards are accepted at many hotels, larger restaurants and established venues, but smaller warungs, markets, drivers and rural spots often want cash. Keep some rupiah for day-to-day spending and use a card where terminals are reliable.

A GBP/IDR exchange rate is how many rupiah one pound converts into. A figure of 21,500 means one pound buys about Rp 21,500 on that quote — the same idea behind a “Bali exchange rate” or “Indonesian rupiah exchange rate” search. The number on a board is not automatically what you receive.

The rupiah floats, so GBP/IDR moves with the market. UK banks, bureaux, Bali money-changers, airport desks and cards usually add a margin, a fee, or both, which is why the same pound amount changes hands for different totals. In Bali especially, compare the rupiah you would actually get for a set pound sum and watch for changers advertising an eye-catching rate then deducting fees.
